The First Annual National Paddling Week A Huge Success!

Although National Paddling Week (NPW) June 15-23, 2013, has come and gone, the success lingers on, as reports, stories, pictures and videos continue to be shared with us.  NPW 2013 was a combined effort of Rapid Media, the Canadian Canoe Museum and Paddle Canada.  The intent was to encourage all Canadians,  new and experienced paddlers, to participate in many different paddling activities, with some emphasis on safety and fun.  Dawn Callan, co-ordinator for the event was ecstatic about the events success in terms of the numbers and involvement from the paddling community.  "Back at the first meeting at the Canadian Canoe Museum in September 2012, our goal was for 100 events to run nationally.  That goal was well surpassed, with 165 unique events running (not including events that had multiple listings, disciplines and days)" says Callan. Preliminary reports put the total participation estimates in the thousands.

Despite having next to zero marketing dollars this year, other than some funds from Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety to build a website and purchase some banners for trade shows, we were fortunate to gain some good free media exposure.  Rapid Media of course provided display ad space in their magazines at no cost, as part of their contribution and produced a NPW booklet which included Safety Tips and Checklists and Resources for paddlers.  Other known media spots included:

  • 22 Newspaper Articles
  • 2 National TV News / Interviews
  • 5 Mentions onf CBC Radio shows during the week
  • 4783 stories created about PaddleWeek facebook page

Unknown at this time, are the mentions in local and regional radio and/or newspapers who are not necessarily posting their content online for us to find.

Some of the weeks highlights included:

  • the launch of a new rowing and paddling club in Trenton, ON, who chose the week of NPW to hold their first open house.
  • Capilano College in BC has become more actively involved with Paddle Canada as a result of this week event.
  • The London Paddling Club has joined PC in running courses as a result of NPW

On Facebook, there are 225 LIkes and growing.  We are still compiling the results and feedback from participants and hosts to build on successes to make next June 2014 event even better and bigger.  We are still awaiting approximate total numbers of participants who participated in the event nationally as well.

The partners would like to thank our premier sponsor Canadian Canoe Foundation in providing a youth canoe trip prize plus Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety for financial support for this project.  A special thanks also to 14 Theories for helping put together a fantastic website.  And finally a huge thanks goes out to all of the paddling community for participating and/or hosting events.

Interested in becoming a sponsor for 2014 Event
